Local Color

On that November afternoon when I first saw Cutter Gap, the crumbling chimney of Alice Henderson's cabin stood stark against the sky, blackened by the flames that had consumed the house. The encroaching field grass and chickweed and pennyroyal had all but obliterated even the outline of the foundations.

These are some places you might want to visit that we locals enjoy frequenting.  Not all of them have webpages, but if you ask someone, they'll give you directions!

Places to Eat/Local Produce

CARVER'S APPLEHOUSE RESTAURANT
Carver's has, quite possibly, the best fried apple pie in the world.  Good, hearty homestyle cooking with a spectacular view of the orchards and Mt. LeConte.  The produce market next door sells dozens of types of local apples, canned goods and is where most of the small local farmers take their produce.  Highly recommended.

SEAY'S COUNTRY STORE

CHRISTY MISSION

Del Rio 37727

HENWALLOW FALLS
This falls is said to get its name from the ruffled grouse's unusual practice of wallowing in the dust. Although it does not carry a high volume of water, Henwallow is a beautiful cascade that fans out as it slides down sheer rock for almost 100 feet. The moderate 4.2 mile trail near the entrance to Cosby Campground leads through hemlock, poplar and rhododendron forest.

MAX PATCH
Right on the Appalachian Trail, Max Patch is a high clear pasture and a favorite of hikers and locals alike.  You can take an extended hike or drive right to the Max Patch parking area.

VIEWING THE ELK
The best area to observe them is in the south eastern section of the park on the North Carolina side named the Cataloochee area which contains most of the elk which can easily be observed in the three large fields accessible by your vehicle.

It will take you at least 45 minutes to get to the Cataloochee area of the national park from exit 20 on I-40. After 0.2 miles make a right onto Cove Creek Road which will take you 11 miles into Cataloochee valley which is fairly well marked.

ALBRIGHT GROVE
Hike Maddron Bald trail to Albright Grove Loop.  This is the oldest stand of old growth forest on the eastern seaboard.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
